Selection of Agniveers
The Agnipath Scheme will follow the existing armed forces selection pattern. The established selection centers will be instrumental in recruiting under the scheme. The recruited candidates will undergo short yet rigorous training to acquire the skills needed to meet the military professional standards.
At the end of the tenure, based upon requirements of the Armed Forces, up to 25% of the Agniveers will be shortlisted through merit and performance-based centralized screening system for a permanent commission as a regular cadre.
Category-wise Eligibility Criteria for Agniveers
Agniveer cadres will be recruited across all armed services in different categories, with varying eligibility criteria. However, the age brackets for all categories are the same.

Although only men are eligible to apply now, the Army plans to induct women cadres through the Agnipath Scheme progressively. Only for the recruitment year of 2022 – 23, a relaxation of up to 23 years in the upper age limit is allowed.

Compensation Package in the Agnipath Scheme
Agniveers will receive an annual composite package of INR 4.76 lacs in year-1, that will upgrade annually up to INR 6.92 lacs in year-4. Upon release from the forces, each Agniveer will receive a tax-exempted one-time SevaNidhi package of INR 10.05 lacs plus interest. The Agniveers will be covered by non-contributory life insurance amounting to INR 48 lacs, payable in the instance of their death to the immediate family. Additionally, for death attributed to service, INR 44 lacs will be paid ex-gratia.
