Noun

A Noun is a naming word.

A Noun is used to name person, place, thing (living or non-living), quality and quantity.

Nouns are of the following types:

  • Proper Noun
  • Common Noun
  • Concrete Noun
  • Abstract Noun
  • Collective Noun

Types of Noun

Proper Noun

A proper noun is a noun that uniquely identifies a person, place or things, e.g. Mahatma Gandhi, India, Taj Mahal, and Everest.

Example of Proper Noun in Sentences

Example :

John is a wrestler.

Jupiter is the largest planet in the Solar System.

Kedarnath is a beautiful temple.

Mumbai is a great city in India.

Common Noun

A Common noun is a noun that describes a class of people or things, e.g. Person, Boy, Girl, City, Country, and Animal.

Example of Common Noun in Sentences

Example :

I love my country.

I do not know the name of the animal.

She is a great woman.

INS Vikrant is a ship of the Indian Navy.

Concrete Noun

A Concrete noun is a noun that refers to things that have a physical existence and, can be observed by at least one of our five senses.

Tree, chair, rock, river, dog, train, etc., these are all concrete noun.

Example :

Sit on the chair.

The train is 4 hours late.

I have a bricks manufacturing company.

This apple is from America.

Abstract Noun

Abstract noun refers to things that have no physical existence and things that you cannot touch or feel, e.g. truth, fear, justice, hatred, humanity, and etc.

Example of Abstract Noun in Sentences

Example :

They praised the honesty of the boy.

I have a fear to go into the haunted house.

We saw no justice in the court’s decision.

Never hide the truth.

Collective Noun

A Collective noun is a noun that refers to a group/collection of people and things, e.g. Government, team, family, committee, police.

Example of Collective Noun in Sentences

Example :

We should feel proud of our Indian Cricket team.

The committee should fix the matter.

A group of girls are passing near the field.

A flock of sheep are gathering in the field.

A bunch of grapes are hanging from the tree.

I bring a bouquet of flowers for her.

Countable Noun and Uncountable Noun

In English Grammar, a noun can be also further divided into two parts, countable noun and uncountable noun.

A Countable noun is those that we can count, e.g. Chair, Table, Eyes, and Nose.

Example of Countable Noun

Example :

I have two books.

I have two phones.

On the other side, uncountable noun or mass noun refers to things that cannot be counted, e.g. motivation, power, energy, hair, and etc.

Example of Uncountable Noun

Example :

I need some motivation.

Still, I have so much energy left in me.
