Parts of speech define how words are used in a sentence.

There are eight parts of speech in the English language:

  • Noun
  • Pronoun
  • Adjective
  • Verb
  • Adverb
  • Prepositions
  • Conjunction
  • Interjection

8 Parts of Speech in the English language

Noun

A noun is a part of a speech which refers to words that are used to define or name a person, place or things (living or Non-living).

Example :

John is a dancer.

I have a brother.

I have a computer.

The tiger is extremely big.

Akbar was a great emperor.

Pronoun

A Pronoun is a part of a speech which is used as a substitute/replacement for a noun.

I, me, he, she, it, we, they, them, and etc., these are all pronoun.

Example :

I have a house.

Ram is not here, he is ill.

She is the prettiest woman of the world.

Rita failed, which broke her heart.

It is very beautiful.

Adjective

This part of a speech is used to qualify/describe a noun or a pronoun.

Adjectives are also used to specify colour, shape, size and quality.

Example :

It is a black cat.

This is a dark room.

Give me a little milk.

Many peoples were present.

Verb

A verb is the most important part of a speech. You can call verbs an action word. Verb signifies the state of being of the subject in a sentence.

Example :

He walks fast.

The rose smells sweet.

They are running to reach their destination.

She is reading books.

Adverb

An adverb is used to describe a verb.

In a sentence, adverbs describe how the action was done.

Sometimes adverb is used to describe adjectives and other adverbs in a sentence.

Example :

He walks fast.

He is very clever.

I did it quite easily.

They are walking slowly.

Prepositions

This part of speech basically forms a positional relationship between the subject and the object.

Prepositions are placed before a noun or, any word related to a noun.

Prepositions make a link between words in a sentence.

There are more than 100 of prepositions in the English Language, e.g. in, at, on, to, for, of, off, from, on, onto, after, into and etc.

Example :

She is in the garden.

He came to see me.

We are at the airport.

The laptop is on my lap.

Conjunction

Conjunction is a part of a speech that binds words, phrases and clauses.

For, And, Nor, But, Or, Yet, So and etc. These are all conjunctions.

Example :

He cannot play because he is ill.

He said this to Ram and Shyam.

I like girls, but I don’t want to marry.

I only travel by train or bus.

Interjection

This part of a speech refers to words, which are used to express spontaneous feelings or reactions in a sentence.

Ahh, Alas!, Congrats!, wow!, damn!, Oh, Uh-oh, Bravo!, and etc. These are all Interjection.

Example :

Alas! He is dead.

Bravo! You are successful.

Oh, what a beautiful scenery!
