The debut session at the IIT Madras Zanzibar campus is set to begin its academic programs in October 2023-2024, apply on iitm.ac.in/zanzibar
Indian Institute of Technology- Madras, the first IIT, set up an international campus at Zanzibar, Tanzania where the session for the first batch will start from the month of October 2023. The final procedural step has been taken through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between India and Tanzania to take the way for this campus.
Details of Academic programs for interested students:
The first academic year(2023-2024) will commence in October 2023. This year two full-time academic programs have been offered by IIT Zanzibar: a four-year Bachelor of Science in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence and a two-year Master of Technology in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence. In the initial stage, the faculty members will be recruited from India. Activities to ensure local talent is developed and can be employed as faculty members are already under process, Institution reported. All foreign students from all countries, including India, can apply for the degree courses.
An entrance process, including a screening test, is developed by faculty experts at IIT Madras and an interview, as per the IITM Senate-approved admission process for international students.
Fees structure:
Interested students will have to pay USD 12,000 per annum for the bachelor’s course and USD 4,000 per year for the master’s course.
At present, the institution will operate its activity in a temporary campus in the Bweleo district in Zanzibar with all accommodations, including offices, classrooms, auditoriums, dining facilities, a dispensary, and playgrounds. The permanent campus of IITM Zanzibar will be planned to set up in Zanzibar Island in 200+ acres of land, the institute said.
It is indeed a major milestone in the history of IIT Madras for the establishment of an international campus in Zanzibar Island, Tanzania. The director of the institute, Prof. V. Kamakoti, said, “Through this campus, we look forward to active participation in the future higher education initiative at Zanzibar.
