Droupadi Murmu is an Indian politician and is the 15th President of India since 25th July, 2022. She is the first tribal President of India. She has a long political career after joining Bharatiya Janata Party in 1997. She served as a minister in the Odisha Government and the Governor of Jharkhand.

In the 15th Presidential election of India Droupadi Murmu (BJP-led NDA candidate), aged 64, won against Yashwat Sinha (Joint Opposition Candidate).

Droupadi Murmu became the first person from the tribal community and the second woman to serve as the President of India. After Pratibha Patil, Droupadi Murmue is only the second woman President of India.

Personal Life of Droupadi Murmu

Droupadi Murmu born on June 20, 1958 to a Santani family in the baidaposi area of Rairangpur, Odisha. She was born to Biranchi Narayan Tudu, who was a farmer and traditional head of the village council in Baldaposi village of Odisha.

She married Shyam Charan Murmu, a banker with whom she had two sons and a daughter. Later she lost her husband, two sons, mother, and a brother.

She is a follower of Brahma Kumaris Spiritual movement.

Droupadi Murmu Education and Career

Murmu completed his career as an arts graduate of Rama Devi Women’s College. She worked as a junior assistant from 1979 – 1983 at the irrigation department of the Government of Odisha. She also got a chance to work as an honorary assistant professor of the Sri Aurobindo Integral Education and Research Centre, Rairangpur.

Droupadi Murmu Political Career

In 1997 Droupadi Murmu joined Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Rairangpur and was elected as the councilor of the Rairangpur Nagar Panchayat. She won the 2000 Odisha Legislative Assembly election from Rairangpur Assembly constituency.

Between 2000-2002 she was the Transport and Commerce Minister of the Odisha Government and between 2002-2004 as the Fisheries and Animal Resources Development.

In 2007, she received the ‘Nilakantha Award’ for best MLA of the year.

On 18 May 2015, Droupadi Murmu sworn in as the 9th and 1st tribal Governor of Jharkhand.
